Hi. Today, in PM Modi’s address to the nation, he announced an extension up to May 3rd to the ongoing 21-day lockdown across India, with expected relaxations after April 20 in places where there is no hotspot.
In this edition of the newsletter, I thought to also look at the state of lockdowns in 10 countries globally that rank the highest in terms of the coronavirus infections.
The information will be based on 1 recent news report that I will link to per country. The Type of regulation mentioned for the countries is as per information on this wikipedia page.

India: Lockdown extended until May 3rd
Type of regulation: Nationwide lockdown (only essential services open)
The Indian Express
Greeting the nation, PM Modi said, "The battle against coronavirus in India is going on strongly. It is because of your cooperation that we have been able to deal with this pandemic successfully. Despite the sufferings, you are engaged in this fight."

PM Modi seeks cooperation from the citizens on 7 fronts:
  • Ensure the elderly take precautions
  • Follow social distancing, use homemade masks
  • Boost your immunity – look for guidelines issued by the Ayush ministry
  • Download and use the Aarogya Setu mobile app
  • Help the poor and the needy
  • Have empathy for people employed in your business
  • Respect coronavirus warriors such as nurses and the medical staff

STATE OF LOCKDOWN GLOBALLY
Now, let’s look at the status and type of regulation in each of these countries.
United States
Type of regulation: Stay-at-home orders.
Some states are taking sweeping action while others are taking a limited approach.
Spain
Type of regulation: Lockdown
As Spain enters its second month of lockdown, some restrictions were eased, allowing those who cannot work from home, such as those in the construction and manufacturing industries, to return to work. However, shops, bars, and restaurants and other businesses considered nonessential remain closed.
Italy
Type of regulation: Strong lockdown
The country has already spent a month under strict measures limiting the freedom of movement of its citizens. Italy will remain in full lockdown until May 3 to stem the tide of new coronavirus infections
France
Type of regulation: Nationwide lockdown
France is extending a lockdown in place since March 17 until May 11, after which schools and businesses are set to gradually reopen. (rephrased)
Germany
Type of regulation: Restrictions regarding social contact and shutdown of many industries nationwide, restrictions for international travellers
The restrictions as they stand are set to expire this Sunday, April 19. Health Minister Jens Spahn indicated last week that the government is hoping to be able to relax some of the restrictions currently in place after Sunday
United Kingdom
Type of regulation: Stay-at-home instruction
The UK was put into lockdown on 23 March in an unprecedented step to attempt to limit the spread of coronavirus. source
China
I am not clear about the lockdown in the entire country. Please refer to this wikipedia page to view the state of lockdown in Hubei province in China, which was the original center of the outbreak of COVID-19. Wuhan just concluded a 76 days lockdown from January 23rd to April 8 this year.
Iran
Iran began reopening government offices Saturday (April 11) after a brief nationwide lockdown to help contain the worst coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East, which has killed more than 4,300 people in the country.
Turkey
Type of regulation: curfew for under 20 aged people and over 65 aged, stay-at-home lockdown in 31 cities from April 11-12.
Dozens of Turkish cities, including Istanbul, have been placed under lockdown for two days from midnight on Friday (April 11-12) to combat the spread of the coronavirus, as the country’s death toll from the pandemic crossed 1,000
Belgium
Type of regulation: Nationwide lockdown
Belgium will extend its lockdown deadline until 19 April to contain the further spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), announced Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès during a press conference. - source: brusseltimes.com on March 27
